Church and Convent of San Francesco Di Assisi

Church and Convent of San Francesco Di Assisi Church and Convent of San Francesco Di Assisi
This church is characterized by a marked monumentality, with its large dome that dominates all the other buildings constituting a topographical point of reference in the monumental landscape of the historic centre of Trapani.

Originally built in the thirteenth century, on a pre-existing building, to change its appearance were the works conducted in the seventeenth century by the architect Bonaventura Certo, which were completed in 1672.

The Latin cross plant has four chapels placed longitudinally along the nave: a valuable element – thematically linked to the Franciscan preaching – are the eleven statues of the “Moral Virtues”, by Cristoforo Milanti. Other important artistic testimonies are the statue of St. Anthony of Padua by Pietro Orlando, the canvas of the Madonna of Trapani by Domenico La Bruna and a wooden crucifix by Leonardo Milanti.

The project of the architect Certo also interested the convent that, attached to the church, has a magnificent portal of the architect Giovanni Biagio Amico.
